Global Encryption Day 2025: From Classroom to Cyberspace — Staying Safe with Encryption
The Africa Rural Internet and STEM Initiative (AFRISTEMI) — a proud member of the Global Encryption Coalition — will mark Global Encryption Day 2025 with a special three-day event from 15th to 17th October 2025 in Sunyani West, Bono Region of Ghana. This event is supported by the Internet Society Foundation and organized in partnership with the Internet Society Online Safety SIG and Cybersecurity SIG.
Why Global Encryption Day Matters
Every year, on October 21, the world observes Global Encryption Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of encryption in safeguarding our digital lives. As more aspects of our daily activities move online — learning, communicating, working, and transacting — encryption serves as a critical line of defense against surveillance, cyberattacks, and privacy violations.
Why Encryption Matters
🔒 Privacy & Personal Data Protection
In an era when personal information — messages, emails, documents — is stored and transmitted digitally, encryption ensures that only the intended recipients can access it.
🛡️ Preventing Unauthorized Access & Cyberattacks
Without encryption, data in transit or at rest can be intercepted, modified, or stolen. Encryption adds a crucial layer of defense even when other security measures fail.
💡 Supporting Open and Secure Innovation
For African innovators, researchers, and STEM learners, secure communication is essential to protect new ideas, research, and intellectual property.
🌍 Trust in Everyday Digital Interactions
From online banking to educational platforms to messaging apps, encryption underpins the trust users place in digital services.
AFRISTEMI’s Commitment
Through this year’s activities in Sunyani West, AFRISTEMI seeks to:
- Raise awareness about the importance of encryption among students, educators, and rural communities.
- Equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to stay safe online.
- Promote the responsible use of technology to protect digital identities and strengthen online safety.
Join the Movement
On Global Encryption Day 2025, let us renew our commitment to protecting privacy, fostering trust, and building a safer digital environment. Encryption is not just a technical tool; it’s part of a broader movement for digital rights, dignity, and security.
Let’s stay curious, stay secure, and stay empowered. 🔐
